Sting was a short sword forged by the Elven smiths of Gondolin in the First Age.

It was given to Frodo Baggins in Rivendell by his cousin Bilbo, the original Ringbearer, who named it Sting. It was discovered by Bilbo in a troll hoard along with the swords Glamdring and Orcrist . Sting served Frodo on his harrowing journey to destroy the One Ring, and Frodo’s companion Samwise Gamgee used it to severely wound the great spider Shelob in Cirith Ungol. Sting's blade glows blue when Orcs, the violent foot soldiers of Sauron are present. Engraved on the blade and crossguard are runes in the Elven language of Sindarin that say "Sting is my name, I am the spider's are bane".
